So how did the Red Sox defy history and vanquish the Yankees? Well, it took two extra-innings victories and this:
The Red Sox training staff thought of various ways to keep the tendon in place. Special high top shoes didn't work, and they hit upon the idea of sewing skin in Schilling's leg to the tissue underneath, creating a wall that would keep the tendon in place.
Oh. My. Goodness. That explains the blood oozing into Schilling's sock, shown close-up ad-infinitum in game 6. The stitches have since been removed, but Schilling and the Sox are ready to do it again.
If Schilling pitches again, (the sutures) would be put back in. Epstein said there was no problem repeating the procedure a couple more times.
It's Schilling's world, the rest of us men just live in it.
