Obama panders to leftists and blows it

Barack Obama, President of the United States. In a prepared speech. reading from a teleprompter. And he confuses a group of windswept islands in the South Atlantic with a group of 26 atolls off of India.
President Obama erred during a speech at the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia, when attempting to call the disputed archipelago by its Spanish name.
Instead of saying Malvinas, however, Mr Obama referred to the islands as the Maldives, a group of 26 atolls that lie off the South coast of India.
So he throws Great Britain under the bus by referring to a British protectorate by the Argentine name, and is still too ignorant to get the Argentine name correct. He managed, in one sentence, to insult both the Brits (who control the islands) and the Argentines (who covet them). And this is "smart diplomacy?"

Update: John Hinderacker at the always excellent Powerline picks up the same line of thought:
So with one word, Obama both offended the British and made himself a laughingstock with the Latin Americans.
